Coconut oil – the wonder food

There are so many great things about this wonder food. Coconut oil has been debunked over the years, because many people assumed wrongly it was high in fat and that was the end of the story. But we now know a lot more about fats, and as far as coconut oil goes, it definitely comes under the heading of a ‘good’ fat.

But the wonders of coconut oil are numerous. Coconut oil is a healthy form saturated fat compared to trans fat. Our body metabolises these fats in the liver, immediately converting this into food for the brain and energy for our muscles rather than it being stored as fat.

Because coconut oil is a medium-chain saturated fatty acid, it gives it a higher cooking temperature than most polyunsaturated or monounsaturated oils. If you’re cooking food that requires high temperatures, say woking up an Asian dish, then coconut oil is ideal for this type of cooking, other oils such as olive oil oxidise at high temperatures, creating nasty free radicals.

Green CoconutsBut wait there’s more! Researchers have discovered coconut oil is easy to digest and also protects the body from insulin resistance. Try adding one teaspoon to your diet and gradually work your way up to four teaspoons per day for weight loss. It works; just ask Miranda Kerr and avid fan of the humble oil.

The Fatty acids in coconut oil contain anti microbial properties, which have a soothing affect on bacteria, candida, or parasites that cause poor digestion, irritable bowl system and other unpleasant plumbing problems. Coconut oil is made up of healthy fats, lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid, which contain antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral prosperities, so it also boosts the immune system.

And one of my favourite benefits of coconut oil – and coconut water for that matter – is it helps stop the evil sugar cravings. This is because good quality fat is more satiating than carbs, so if you cut down on empty sugar calories, you will feel less starved. Most of us don’t realize but constant hunger is a clue that your body is not being fed correctly.

And if all that isn’t enough, coconut oil works just as well on the outside as it does on your insides. Coconut oil makes a great natural moisturiser for you skin and an amazing treatment for your hair. However you use this wonder oil, be sure to get organic virgin coconut oils, as pure as nature intended. What’s not to love?
